Differences between CBD and hemp oil

While cannabis plants have been used for medicine and rituals around the world for thousands of years, Western medicine and mainstream culture are only just catching on and realizing the plants' true potential.

The current market is flooded with both hemp and CBD products, in everything from food to medicine, but there's a lot of confusion when it comes to hemp oil and CBD oil. Many people think they're the same thing, but this simply isn't true. Here's a breakdown of the two oils and their differences.

Hemp Oil

The determining factor in the naming of oils derived from the hemp plant is where the oil is extracted from. If the oil is extracted from the hemp plant seeds, then it's called hemp oil or hempseed oil. Hemp seeds are pressed and sometimes processed and maybe even refined before being bottled for sale and use.

Hemp oil doesn't usually contain any amounts of cannabidiol (CBD) or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), but if it does, it's so minute that it doesn't cause any cannabinoid effects.

Hemp oil has many powerful nutritional benefits such as:

  • Protein
  • Fibre
  • Vitamin E
  • Phosphorus
  • Potassium
  • Sodium
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids
  • Asgamma-linolenic acid

The polyunsaturated and essential fatty acids in hemp oil/hemp seed oil are essential for many bodily functions. In particular, the hemp seed oil is excellent for:

  • Adding flavor in cooking
  • Encouraging healthy blood pressure
  • Helping skin conditions like eczema

Cannabidiol (CBD oil) is a dietary supplement. This oil is extracted from the flowers, stalks, stems, and leaves of matured hemp plants, where there is a higher concentration of CBD. CBD oil comes in many forms, such as vaporized liquid, capsules, oils, tinctures, edibles, and even cosmetics. Additionally, CBD oil has legal limits on how much THC it can contain.

CBD oil is most often ingested, but it can also be applied topically. Unlike hempseed oil, CBD oils should come with a certificate of analysis (COA).
On top of the health benefits that hemp seed oil offers, CBD oil also:
• Relieves stress
• Aids in sleep quality
• Alleviates the symptoms of joint pain and arthritis
• Alleviates stress, pain, and anxiety
